Assemblies 2009-2010
Anti Bully – October 13 (during Red Ribbon Week) – John Abrams – “The Bully Game”
Prevent bullying, repel peer pressure and improve the overall school experience. The Bully Game is a program that’s TRULY A GAME SHOW. Your students are the contestants; the entire audience is involved, and everyone learns valuable lessons about preventing bullying. Through magic, music and a bit of mayhem, your students will learn the difference between friendly teasing and not-so-friendly taunting; how gossip works and why it’s such a monster; when’s a good time to “Tell” and when it’s simply “Tattling”; how to be a good “Witness” (not just a bystander); when and how to use assertive words to repel the bully; how to keep their own self respect, even when things go badly, and how we can all work together to prevent this problem. There are even prizes for the winners!
Ability Awareness – November 18 – Jesse Billauer – “Life Rolls On” **
Jesse was a competitive surfer who was about to turn pro when a surfing accident at age 17 left him paralyzed from his chest down. He has created a non-profit foundation called Life Rolls On dedicated to increasing awareness about spinal cord injuries. With such dedication and love for life, Jesse has inspired people to look at their lives in a more thoughtful and thankful way. As a result, he has helped them in their personal as well as professional careers. His assembly opens with video showing Jesse’s Life up to his injury; then Jesse is introduced as he “rolls” out onto stage. He speaks at length of his life experiences and intertwines his message throughout; the presentation closes with video of Jesses life post-injury, followed by a Question & Answer period.
Reading Challenge – January 14 – We Tell Stories – “Let Them Eat Books”
This year, the reading challenge theme is “around the world”; this assembly will kick off our annual challenge. Let Them Eat Books is a multi-ethnic storytelling troupe founded with a threefold purpose: to entertain and educate children through the literature, folklore, and mythology of all times and cultures; to expose them to the processes of language and acting as art forms; and to inspire them to plumb the depths and reach the heights of their own creativity. There is a “curriculum connection” available for this assembly.
VAPA – February 24 – Street Beat
Street Beat is a drum/percussion based music program that performed at LCH last year. The percussion instruments are “re-purposed” household items, as inspired by the theatrical success “Stomp”. Our mission is to provide students a solid understanding of Rhythm & Percussion—the nuts and bolts of music. This engaging, standards-based program meets the needs of diverse student populations, including students with special needs, language barriers and otherwise. We teach, uplift and inspire students of all backgrounds to integrate music-playing into their daily lives. Music and the Art of Drumming are used as a creative learning tool that addresses life skills and enhances the mind, body and spirit.
