Welcome to the LCH Green Team.
The Green Team is encouraging our students to be responsible stewards of our natural resources. Here are some of the green activities that are going on at La Costa Heights right now as well as some future events.
No trash Tuesdays is our attempt to reduce the amount of trash in our landfills. The average school-aged child produces 67 pounds of trash per school year. Children are encouraged to work with their parents to come up with ways to reduce the amount of trash associated with the lunch they bring to school. Many schools all over the country have successfully implemented this program and as a result have reduced their lunch time waste stream. Lunch time trash audits are conducted on Tuesdays. Our goal is to get as close to a school wide zero waste lunch as possible.
Green Parties -We are also trying to reduce the waste accumulated by paper plates, paper cups and plastic utensils at class parties by maintaining a set of plastic reusable cups and plates, real –but inexpensive silverware and cloth napkins for the entire class. The set will stay with the teacher for the years to come. Some classrooms are purchasing these reusable sets through on line through a company called Kids Konserve and others are holding a classroom utensil drive where we ask parents to send one plastic plate and cup to school and a cloth napkin and an inexpensive (or extra) silverware setting. It is understood that these items will not be returned at the end of the year.
Green Spot Award – The Green Team is honoring classrooms that are committed to making a meaningful green change with a Green Spot award. This award is to be hung in place visible for all the school to see. The goal is to be a school committed to green changes.
Final Fridays – The Green Teams holds a spent batteries and plastic grocery bag collection the final Friday of each month. The LCH Green Team will collect your spent AAA, AA, C or D batteries and drop them off at our local recycling center. In order to offer this voluntary service, we must ask that each family bring no more than 10 batteries per scheduled “drop-off” day. We also ask that, for safety reasons, you please tape the ends of the batteries and place them in a plastic bag.
Beach Clean Up- LCH will head down to South Ponto on Sunday, January 24th from 2pm to 4pm for our first school-wide beach clean up. Update — What a success! We had over 80 participants and 100lbs of debris. Way to show your spirit LCH!!!
WOW or Walk to School Wednesdays – Some local neighborhoods have organized walking groups on Wednesdays in order to save gas and reduce parking lot congestion and emissions.
Our mission is to educate students and families about lifestyle choices that will benefit the environment and to foster a long term vision of responsible stewardship of the Earth’s natural resources. If you would like to be part of the LCH Green Team or want to help in any way, please contact Camille Lofaro Sowinski at camillelofaro@hotmail.com. We look forward to working together and making a difference at LCH in preserving our Earth’s resources!
